HOW TO STAGE A MAGNIFICENT QUAIL HUNT

Leave it to Fitch Farms in Holly Springs, Mississippi to stage the finest quail hunting in the Southeast employing nationally renowned trainer, John Rex Gates, along with premier guides and champion bird dogs. Fitch Farms is graciously providing a quail hunt for FOUR. Guests may hunt on horseback or by mule drawn wagon and lodge in the original home of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forest.  Act one opens as you arrive the night before the hunt to enjoy a plantation style feast.   Act two commences the next morning with a 7:30 country breakfast before your guide launches you on your morning hunt.  At noon you’ll head back to the lodge for a fitting lunch to refresh you for your afternoon hunt.  As you visit and relax following the hunt, you will enjoy an array of delicious hors d’oeuvres. Then, before the curtain drops, your birds are cleaned and packed for your departure.  There is a 12 bird privilege per person.  Quite a performance for the novice or experienced hunter.

jbouldin-nandina-jdrf2010

Jason Bouldin Painting, “Epiphany Nandina”

Artist Jason Bouldin has been described by American Artist as a “gifted artist who has already established himself as a portrait and landscape painter.” He was featured by The Artist’s Magazine in their 20th anniversary issue as one of 20 contemporary artists “on the rise” in America. Nationally regarded for his portrait work, Jason Bouldin received the Portrait Society of America’s top prize for one of his portraits in 2002.

His subjects include those close to home, such as former Governor William F. Winter, as well as subjects far away, such as Derek Bok, president of Harvard University. Although primarily a portraitist, he enjoys painting landscape and still life studies, and has garnered prizes for works in those genres as well, having been selected in 2003 for the national “Sea to Shining Sea” exhibit, in 2001 for the American Artists Professional League Annual Exhibition, and twice for the National Parks Academy “Arts for the Parks” Exhibition.

Perhaps some of the most personal works are his still life paintings which originate mainly as a response to flowers and plants gathered on walks, from his own garden, from that of friends or from his family home in Clarksdale.  He believes that a still life, like a good portrait, does more than provide a physical description; it must communicate to the viewer something of the more intangible qualities of the object it is depicting.

The still life to be auctioned for the JDRF 2010 Hope Gala represents a plant common to the Southern garden in winter—Nandina (Nandina domestica).  The 25X32 oil on canvas painting was created especially for JDRF’s 2010 Hope Gala.

The still life of Nandina fits in a theme of one of the artist’s favorite subjects—to recognize and then to name in paint the often unnoticed or under appreciated beauty of simple and commonplace objects that surround us.  The Nandina is presented in the still life in a plain glass jar to emphasize its “work-horse” nature in Southern landscaping.  This particular bouquet comes from the yard of the artist’s parents in Clarksdale.

The frame was custom created by the artist’s brother, Mahlon Bouldin.

Many thanks to the artist for donating all proceeds to funding a cure, in honor of his brother, Marshall Bouldin’s commitment to helping people living with diabetes.

The 2009 Walk to Cure Diabetes was held on Saturday, October 24 at Mayes Lake at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park.  Over 1,500  attended the Walk and an astounding $530,000 was raised to support needed research to improve the lives of everyone living with diabetes.  The kids all had a fabulous time and enjoyed “their day.”   Of course, the Mississippi Chapter could not have supported such a great event without the help of our generous sponsors, wonderful volunteers, and dedicated participants.  For all that you do – thank you!
