Walk to Cure Diabetes

2009 Walk Family Party and Walk Day!

Over 70 families attended the annual JDRF Family Party on Friday night before the walk.  They were treated to a fun carnival theme with games and wonderful prizes organized by 2009 Walk Family Team Chair, Cyndi McCoy.  Newly diagnosed families from Ponotoc to Biloxi met with families, board members and sponsors for a funfilled evening!  Chris and Janet Grillis grilled hotdogs and hamburgers for this family inclusive event.  Many thanks to the attendees for making this year’s event the best ever!!!!!

The 2009 Walk to Cure Diabetes was held on Saturday, October 24 at Mayes Lake at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park.  Over 1,500  attended the Walk and an astounding $530,000 was raised to support needed research to improve the lives of everyone living with diabetes.  The kids all had a fabulous time and enjoyed “their day.”   Of course, the Mississippi Chapter could not have supported such a great event without the help of our generous sponsors, wonderful volunteers, and dedicated participants.  For all that you do – thank you!

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) Annual Corporate Breakfast was held on June 4, 2009 at the River Hills Club. This event introduces the Walk Corporate Chair to our sponsorship community, and to the Board of Directors. We are lucky to have David Gates, President of the Mississippi Division of Atmos Energy as our Corporate Chair this year, and we know he and the employees at Atmos will do a fantastic job! Atmos has always been a great supporter of the JDRF Mississippi Chapter, and we look forward to working more closely with them this year. We had just over 60 people in attendance, including a few of our type 1 kids, and they are pictured here with David.

Walk To Cure LogoWe would like to thank the more than 2300 people who participated in the 10th annual Mississippi Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes, raising $635,000. The proceeds raised go toward research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications.

This shows what a huge difference we can make working together,” said Corporate Recruitment Chairman, Alon Bee. “Walks like this are funding research to speed the search for a cure.”

The energetic and enthusiastic walkers enjoyed a beautiful day at Mayes Lake at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park complete with clowns, trains, music and face painting. Other entertainment was provided by Scott Steele, the Hinds County Hi-Steppers, and Miss Mississippi Christine Kozlowski. After the Walk they enjoyed food provided by Glucerna and Chick-Fil-A.

walk001_small“I’d like to thank Alon Bee, the Mississippi Chapter Staff and all our wonderful volunteers for working so hard and making this walk so successful,” said Chapter President Harold Corbin. “The complications of diabetes are devastating.
